Greenpeace Global Engagement and Programme Departments are looking for an International Communications Strategist to join the team working throughout 2021 on key global political moments, such the Biodiversity and Climate summits.
Description
This is a fixed-term project role for 12 months, commencing January 2021. The candidate may be based in any country with a Greenpeace Organisation (subject to agreement).
As the world lurches out of an acute public health crisis, the ongoing chronic climate and biodiversity crises beckons, and a slew of postponed but no less urgent multilateral events are being replanned and prepared. It’s a chance to remake global governance for the environment and for the people. Greenpeace is running a Global Political Moments campaign and needs an International Communications Strategist.
Is it you?
Someone with a passion for storytelling, audience centricity and a relentless desire to translate complex subjects and negotiations into relatable, actionable information. Someone who knows that a key target audience can be defined by inspiring millions to rise to their agency and build power, or by compelling a small number of people to use their agency and power to do the right thing. Someone who can choose the right language and platforms for the right audiences through deep listening.
Someone who is a proven strategist, an implementer and practitioner who can lead by example. A team leader and a player, with a proven track record in multilateral communications: proactive, reactive and effective in promoting a safer, fairer future that places people and planet at the heart of decision-making processes.
The Communications Strategist, as part of our 2021 Global Moments team, will empower us to tell a compelling global story woven from a myriad of local, national and international events. Intimately familiar with the climate and nature debates, actors and audiences in key countries and at the international level, the Communications Strategist is globally networked and able to engage proactively and responsively across the respective media/ press communities. The Communication Strategist must be experienced in working with partners from a variety of disciplines and geographies. The Strategist will coordinate with a network of communications specialists from across the global organisation and with allies.
Above all, the Communications Strategist is someone who has a burning passion for translating complex subjects into relatable and actionable information. They must be able to do so at pace, under pressure, maintaining accuracy across distribution platforms. This is a role for a problem solver, not a problem finder.
Day to day responsibilities will include
Strategy development & management: Working closely with all relevant stakeholders, take a lead in design and implementation of effective communications strategies to influence and shift the debate, create public support and political space for enhanced campaign outcomes
Content creation: Commissioning, writing and editing media materials such as press releases, advisories, background briefings, reports, web notices, etc.
Community of Practice: Developing relationships and approaches which enable responsiveness. For example:
Communications alignment & collaboration: sharing draft plans, messaging and outputs for information, etc., to ensure consistency in our narratives and outputs
Media outreach & requests: coordinating proactively on international media outreach and requests
Audience research: Working with Greenpeace’s Insights Team and NRO communications specialists, make use of best practice to develop and test new frames and narratives with targeted audiences
Knowledge base: Have a good understanding of geopolitical dynamics, tracking relevant media debates and public conversation around international politics, related UN processes, policy, etc. in key countries and sectors
Networking/ allies: Developing and maintaining an international network of contacts/ allies, promoting Greenpeace strategic interests in communications and media relations, pro-active promotion of stories, outreach on emerging issues and reactive media management
Impact: Contributing to the monitoring, evaluation and learning on the communications/ media impact.
We are looking for someone with
Significant experience in strategic communications, with an advanced understanding of, and proven track record in delivering traditional and digital media output at international events
Exceptional English writing and analytical skills, from the ability to draft opinion pieces to translating political strategies into audience and engagement centric communications, strategies and outputs
Proactive and deadline oriented, thinks on paper and provides fast, accurate turn around
Knowledgeable about the climate and biodiversity movements and the topics being discussed at the international level
Strong time and priority management, high level of self-motivation and can-do mentality, ability to work effectively under stressful conditions and across time zones
Strong interpersonal relations and influencing skills, able to work effectively in a remote situation, and still build trust quickly with partners and colleagues in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams
Ability to lead and influence with a passion for excellence, to achieve agreed goals and to drive change without direct authority, a good team player with some project management and team management experience desirable
Compensation benefits
Compensation and benefits are subject to the country and Greenpeace Organisation where the successful candidate will be based.
