The BBC’s Moscow Bureau is one of seven hub bureaux around the world and as such is among the busiest and most challenging of broadcast environments. The Bureau incorporates the following BBC services: Newsgathering, Russian Service, Monitoring. Working together, these services provide BBC programmes, including business and online services, with broadcast news and current affairs material of the highest possible editorial, production and technical standards gathered in the most efficient manner on a range of subjects.
News from Russia and the Former Soviet Union occupies an important place in the global news agenda and the BBC seeks to remain a competitive, respected and reliable source of information from across the region.
The Russian Service is one of the largest language services in the BBC World Service. It has a 24/7 multiplatform website and a large amount of video, interactive and audio content including two radio programmes. Its staff is mostly located in London and Moscow, and a large part of the output is from the Moscow bureau.
The service’s output aims to make international news relevant to a Russian audience, and bring international perspectives to bear on Russian and FSU developments. It aims to report in a lively and engaging fashion, and interactivity, promotion of content on social media and social newsgathering form a large part of its activities across all platforms.
Main Responsibilities:
Company is recruiting a Senior Journalist to lead an online team in Moscow. You'll desk edit the online multiplatform offer, ensuring that output conforms to the highest editorial and production standards, is lively and interesting and of relevance to the target area, and that BBC’s editorial guidelines are adhered to. You'll oversee coverage so that all stories are reported in a multimedia way. Working alongside other Editors and Senior Journalists/Senior Producers (multimedia), you'll act as a point of editorial reference, providing editorial leadership as required.
The key duties include editing the front page of bbcrussian.com from time to time as required, subbing online, audio and video stories and making suggestions on deployments and commissions (in coordination with the planners).
Are you the right candidate:
- First-class Russian language skills and a good working knowledge of both written and spoken English
- Knowledge and practical experience of weekly and/or daily journalism
- Proven experience of originating and implementing bold and original ideas and exercising sound judgement
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of Russian political, social, cultural and historical context as well as the changing needs of the audience. A particular area of specialisation in one of the topics currently relevant for the Russian audience
- A strong awareness of health and safety / high risk issues, especially those relating to investigative journalism
- Experience of live broadcasting, interviewing and reporting, preparing and voicing packages for broadcast is desirable
