Pushkin House is seeking exceptional candidates for the role of Executive Director.
Pushkin House is an independent arts charity specialising in Russian culture. Founded by two generations of émigré Russians, the organization creates a welcoming meeting-place for the enjoyment, understanding and promotion of Russian culture in all its forms.
Description of candidates for the position:
The new Director will develop and deliver a vision for the next phase of the organisation, including maintaining a high level of programming that encompasses educational activities, continuing to expand our online presence, developing fundraising potential and working with the fabric of our historic building to improve visitor experience.
The annual book prize and music festival are fixtures of the programme. The Director is responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the organisation and its various activities. They will play an active role in maintaining Pushkin House’s profile and developing social and cultural links with a wide variety of organisations.
The successful candidate will be an inspiring leader and manager with experience in the charitable sector. They will have strong knowledge of Russian culture and have Russian language abilities. As well as being an outstanding communicator and advocate, the successful candidate will bring commercial acumen and a sophisticated understanding of, and experience in, fundraising.
They will be able to work at both the operational and the strategic level and will ideally have experience of delivering events. Pushkin House is the oldest, independently-funded, UK charity specialising in Russian culture.
The key tasks of the role of the Executive Director are:
To develop a long-term plan for Pushkin House encompassing fundraising, programming, governance, staffing and facilities.
To provide regular reports to trustees on operations, plans, and finances sand prepare papers for trustee meetings.
To manage the budget to ensure Pushkin House does not overspend and to oversee the accounting function.
To manage the day-to-day operations of Pushkin House. Managing staff.
To recruit and manage staff including conducting appraisals and setting objectives.
To develop a staffing plan, including pay reviews and skill development.
To work with contractors such as music and art curators. Programming.
To maintain the annual book prize and music festival as flagship Pushkin House events.
To maintain the reputation of Pushkin House as an independent centre for Russian culture in the UK.
To liaise with stakeholders to deliver a thriving programme and maintain loyalty to the long-term vision of Pushkin House.
To expand our ability to deliver programming in a high quality, digital format accessible online to a global audience.
To plan a programme of exhibitions, with accompanying programmes, (on average four per year), that is relevant and may attract buyers.
To collaborate with artists, commissioning new work when possible.
To introduce events and chair them when the need arises. Communications.
To maintain a high standard of writing all across the website, including event descriptions.
To oversee the social media and marketing strategy.
To promote programming through press releases, invitations, social media, the website and posters. Fundraising and development.
To lead on fundraising and development activities.
To work together with the Development Manager and Development Committee on a fundraising strategy including a legacy programme.
Together with the Development Manager and staff to promote and develop the Friends and Muses Programme and the Young Pushkin Programme.
To cultivate new donors.
To maintain a number of income streams, including tickets for cultural events, the ‘learn and participate’ programme, the bookshop, and private hire.
To work closely with staff on optimising private hire of the building, maximising profit without interfering with the cultural programme or reputation of Pushkin House.
To be an ambassador for Pushkin House at external events.
To maintain and conserve the fabric of the building according to guidelines for Grade 2 buildings Together with the relevant Committee to develop a programme for the maintenance, repair and refurbishment of the building and to help oversee the implementation of that programme.
To oversee the work of the Facilities Manager in maintaining the building.
Person Specification Essential:
Knowledge of current and historical Russian culture and arts Excellent interpersonal skills, with good verbal and written communication skills in English and Russian
Excellent staff management skills and ability to work well within a small team Ability to develop a wide programme of events
Experience of running an organisation
Knowledge of the regulatory framework that governs charities and of charity governance
Experience of working with and reporting to a board of trustees
Experience of financial management
Experience of fundraising
Desirable:
Experience of managing the refurbishment of historic buildings.
